One of the objectives of the Alamo Eagles Chapter is to support wounded Screaming Eagles at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This is a joint activity with the National Headquarters. They use funds from the Screaming Eagle Foundation to give the SAMMC Liaison Team gift bags and limited financial assistance for unusual situations. The gift bags include clothing items and a 101st Airborne Division flag. Wounded Screaming Eagles typically arrive at SAMMC without any clothing except for hospital gowns.
The SAMMC Liaison Team started in February 2011 during a very intense period of the active 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)' combat service in the Global War on Terror. A member of the Team originated the idea of passing out Tootsie Roll Pops during their visits to the wounded Screaming Eagles, their families, and supporting medical staff. The Tootsie Roll Pop Patrol has probably handed out thousands of Tootsie Roll Pops.
With the decrease in the intensity of active 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) operations, the SAMMC Liaison Team is operating in standby mode at this time ready to assist any Screaming Eagle that may come to SAMMC.
The SAMMC Liaison Team will be a sponsored function of the Alamo Eagle Chapter open to participation by all members consistent with the needs of wounded Screaming Eagles and the availability of Chapter members to serve.
